The naming of Amanzimtoti is generally attributed to the renowned Zulu King Shaka, who stopped here in 1828 with his army during one of their campaigns. Legend has it that after being given water to drink from the local river, he remarked ‘kanti amanzi mtoti’ (so the water is sweet), thereby giving the river, and the town that later developed around it, the name of Amanzimtoti.

Amanzimtoti, also known as Toti, derives its name from a significant event in Zulu history. Legend has it that during a campaign in 1828, Zulu King Shaka and his army stopped at the local river. Upon tasting the water, Shaka exclaimed, "kanti amanzi mtoti" (so the water is sweet), giving rise to the name Amanzimtoti, which translates to "the place of sweet waters."
