HIGHLAND SPIRIT IN THE MIDLANDS

Category General News

This past Saturday, 24 August 2024, the picturesque hamlet of Fort Nottingham in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands was transformed into a vibrant hub of Scottish heritage as the annual Fort Nottingham Highland Gathering returned with all its nostalgic charm.

The event, inspired by the world-famous Braemar Gathering, brought together locals and visitors alike for a day filled with tradition, athletic prowess, and cultural celebration. Wakefields Midlands was proud to be a part of this joyous occasion, immersing ourselves in the rich tapestry of Scottish customs while celebrating the spirit of community.

The day began with the resounding echoes of bagpipes and drums filling the air, setting the stage for a series of captivating events that transported attendees to the Scottish Highlands. The highlight of the gathering was undoubtedly the traditional Highland Games, where brave athletes showcased their strength, endurance, and skill in events such as tossing the caber, weight over the bar, and the ever-popular tug of war. This year, in celebration of Women's Month, a record number of all-female teams participated, adding a special focus on women's contributions to these age-old traditions.

The Fort Nottingham Highland Gathering was more than just a showcase of athleticism; it was a vibrant celebration of arts, culture, and community. Attendees were captivated by the harmonious voices of the Shea O'Connor Choir and the elegant performances by the Howick Scottish Dancers. The event also featured lively Celtic music from the Dargle Swinging Sporran, alongside stirring performances by the African Skye, Pietermaritzburg Caledonian Society, and Durban Caledonian Society pipe bands. These musical elements provided a deep connection to Scotland's rich cultural heritage. For families, the gathering offered a variety of engaging activities, including sword jousting, children's tug of war, and sack races, creating a festive atmosphere for all ages.

No celebration of Scottish heritage would be complete without honouring its culinary traditions. Attendees indulged in time-honoured Scottish dishes passed down through generations, and for those seeking to immerse themselves in the full flavour of Scotland, there was an opportunity to enjoy authentic Scotch whisky at the tasting sessions.

What truly set this year's gathering apart was the sense of community that permeated every aspect of the event. The Fort Nottingham Highland Gathering is more than just a celebration of Scottish heritage; it's a testament to the power of community. It brings together people from all walks of life, forging new friendships and strengthening old ones in the process. The gathering serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving traditions while also creating new ones that reflect our contemporary world.

For Wakefields Midlands, being part of this event was a testament to the vibrant culture and close-knit community that define the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands as a unique place to live and work. We're already looking forward to next year's gathering and the opportunity to once again celebrate the traditions that unite us.
