Salt Rock at a glance
Salt Rock is a small town just north of Ballito and Shaka's Rock. It is a popular holiday destination, with a lifeguarded beach (great for surfing), massive tidal pool, good fishing spots and beautiful reefs offshore.
The name Salt Rock originates from King Shaka's days when his handmaidens used to collect dried salt off the rocks at low tide. It owes much of its history to Basil Hulett and his wife Gwen who started not only the Salt Rock Hotel, but went on to develop the town of Salt Rock that is found today.
Salt Rock is about 40 minutes north of Durban, 15 minutes from Sibaya Casino and just up the road from bustling Ballito. Nightlife in the small town provides a variety of bars, pubs and restaurants offering a variety of food and drinks. New developments including Dunkirk Estate, Mount Richmore and Sheffield Manor are situated in Salt Rock as well as the Tiffany's Shopping Mall. Curro Mount Richmore private school is situated within Mount Richmore Estate.
